The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation have announced the closure of the famous beach featured in the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio from the 1st of June until the 30th of September.
The closure comes after debates between the departments, academics and business owners about the state of the marine environment. The National Parks Director, Suksawang concluded that despite protests from business owners about an outcome of a negative impact of tourism, that measures had to be taken to “ensure that its ecological system improves”.
Suksawang says the Department plans to bring in a team of researchers to analyze the impact of tourism activities on the reef. There are also plans to increase costs on fees to the beach and for the tourism boats to park in a different bay so tourists can walk a trail to Maya bay instead of damaging the reef.
