Illinois Condo Law Puts Landlord’s Privacy at Risk

According to the Chicago Tribune, a new condo law has sparked concerns over the privacy of landlords.

Under Section 19 of Illinois House Bill 189, the Illinois Condominium Property Act has been amended to allow unit owners to request contact details for other unit owners in the same association.

This means that condominium associations are required to keep telephone numbers and email addresses of unit owners and provide them to those who request them, even if a proper purpose for doing so is not given. However, in order to receive the information, written statements noting that it won’t be used for commercial purposes are required.

Real estate law experts have advises landlords to create separate telephone numbers and email addresses that are designated specifically for this purpose.
