Cyril Ramaphosa has taken office as South Africa’s new president after former president Jacob Zuma stepped down due to corruption issues. Under Ramaphosa’s new reign he announced in front of Parliament plans to redistribute lands from white South African farmers to their black counterparts, in hopes to “heal the divisions of the past”.
He followed up his plan commenting the land redistribution will be handled in a way that will not damage the economy. However, a country who has implemented a similar policy with land redistribution from white to black people was their neighboring country, Zimbabwe.
The policy had dire consequences for the nation in terms of food production and resulted in hyperinflation for the economy. Zimbabwe suffered the effects for a decade, relying on the UN World Food Programme because their experienced farmers were kicked out.
