The First Fatality Involving a Self Driving Vehicle

Uber_self-driving_car2On Monday in the suburb of Tempe, Arizona, Elaine Herzberg was struck outside a crosswalk by an autonomous Uber vehicle that was driving approximately 40 miles per hour, reports Tempe authorities. The accident was a huge blow to legislation regarding the future of self driving vehicles on US roads.

The accident is still under investigation by Tempe police to place the fault of the woman’s death. The previous Friday, Uber had pressed lawmakers to speed up the introduction of self driving cars; however, the legislation was delayed due to safety concerns.

In Pittsburgh last week, an autonomous Uber car had crashed with another car, though there were no injuries. The company has come under a lot of scrutiny about its safety regulations involving the new generation vehicles.
