Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has stated that the government will begin cracking down on condo owners and others who rent accommodation that fail to get proper licensing.
The move will attempt to bring 20,000 unlicensed short-term rental properties under regulations laid out in Thailand’s Hotel Act.
Under the act, safety rules such as properly installed and operating fire extinguishers must be maintained.
Unlicensed or illegal accommodations will reportedly be given 90 days to acquire the proper license or face closure.
Thailand property lawyers state that Thailand has had a major issue with buildings acting as de facto hotels and skirting regulations as well as taxes.
