A large Chinese chemical corporation has been ordered to pay ¥820,000 (4,100,000 baht) to a farmer who took them to court for dumping tonnes of hazardous waste on his land.
Wang Englin, who is in his 60’s, only had three years of formal education. Tired of state-owned company Qinghua dumping 15,000-20,000 tonnes of chemical waste on his land every year, he decided to take legal action. However, since he was unable to hire an attorney, his only choice was to fight his case alone. In order to do so, he began frequenting the local bookstore, giving the owner sacks of corn in exchange for allowing him to copy legal information from books by hand. This arduous process took him 16 years.
The court ordered the company to pay compensation to Mr. Wang. However, it is expected to appeal the verdict.
