A proposed constitutional amendment may be able to remove a provision in the Florida state Constitution that was originally implemented in 1926 to ban illegal immigrants from owning land.
The Florida Constitution Revision Commission backed the proposal 36-1 and in November when people vote for the provision, at least 60% of voters are needed in order for the amendment to be instated.
A similar vote for a provision to remove language in 2008 did not gain enough votes and was rejected. Critics say these types of provisions are a part of the state’s “discriminatory past”. The proposed amendment contains two other measures including getting rid of obsolete language that would authorize a high-speed rail system and another one about criminal statute repeal.
