The crackdown on “soapy massage” parlors in Bangkok started after an investigation into the “Victoria Secret” brothel, where authorities found the establishment was avoiding their utility bills by illegally extracting groundwater. There are now over 40 brothels being investigated.

These soapy massage parlors have dozens of private bathrooms where customers may receive sexual services. All rooms will be investigated to test whether the water is from a legitimate pipeline or underground.

The implications of this activity accelerates the sinking state of Bangkok, as it is a low lying city built on the banks of the Chaophraya river. Experts have estimated that due to rising sea levels, parts of Bangkok may be submerged by 2030.

Police investigations have also found underage sex workers and a list of bribes to authorities from certain massage parlors.
