Condominiums in Alberta that fail to make their buildings marijuana and smoke free may leave their Condo boards legally vulnerable. A spokesperson from Edmonton’s CBC Radio, says in order for these corporations to minimize as much conflict as possible, it is recommended to go with “total prohibition”.
He also adds that because the legal use of recreational marijuana will come into effect by July of this year, Condo boards need to start preparing the proper regulations. The proposed Marijuana laws would allow for the plant to be grown in homes. However, the legalization of the plant does not mean it can be used in condos.
Condo Corporations can use tools such as rental agreements and condo bylaws to stop the use cannabis consumption and cultivation in condo buildings. Condo boards have the right to ban the plant due to healthy and safety issues.
